One of the most celebrated and legendary endorsements that Jordan Brand has ever worked on is undoubtedly none other than the Air Jordan “Mars Blackmon” advertisement campaign. A lot of sneakerheads probably do not know where that ad campaign originated from. Back then, Widen+Kennedy was Nike’s ad agency of choice. Around that time, Michael Jordan and Spike Lee had already teamed up with each other for Jordan releases numerous times. Apart from the Air Jordan 4 “Mars Blackmon,” the “Motorsports” iteration of the model has also been associated with Spike Lee’s character since it featured his logo. However, the 2017 Air Jordan 4 “Motorsports” will be different.
Back in 1986, Bill Davenport was the the president and Jim Riswold was the director of Wieden+Kennedy. While out at the movies in Los Angeles, the two of them ended up viewing the trailer of Spike Lee’s 1986 comedy-drama film, She’s Gotta Have It. They were quite impressed by how charismatic Spike Lee appeared to be and upon returning to Portland, they watched the film. In the film, Spike Lee plays Mars Blackmon, a man who keeps his Air Jordan sneakers on even he has the opportunity to sleep with the woman he has been pursuing. That served as the idea for the Air Jordan “Mars Blackmon” ad campaign.
The Air Jordan 4 “Motorsports” came to be as a result of Michael Jordan’s fondness for motorbikes. Back in 2004, MJ had even introduced his own professional closed-course motorcycle road racing team, aptly named Michael Jordan Motorsports. Many sneakerheads are likely aware that this is not the first time Jordan Brand is dropping the Air Jordan 4 “Motorsports,” but the 2007 release was a limited one. Moreover, judging from a detailed photo shared by Instagram user , the version that will be among the Air Jordan releases 2017 will not exactly be a “remastered” retro. Despite sporting the same Black, Royal Blue and White color scheme, the “Nars Blackmon” logo will be absent from the heel panels.
The photo of the sneaker accompanying this post is obviously not an official one, which should also make it apparently that Jordan Brand has not made any official announcement yet. Nonetheless, the Air Jordan 4 “Motorsports” can be expected to join the other retro Jordan releases 2017.
