Nike recently introduced the Five Decades Of Basketball Collection in honor of their impact on basketball-related fashion and also to integrate the sport into New York Fashion Week. Along with the Air Force 1 High, Air Zoom Generation, Blazer Studio and the Flight Bonafide, Nike also included a similar Vachetta Tan iteration of the Air Foamposite Pro into the collection as well. The five models were a representation of the past five decades of Nike ever since the 1970s. Nike dropped the Air Foamposite Pro “Vachetta Tan” from the collection on February 18th and April 2017 will mark the return of the Air Foamposite One “Copper.”
Twenty years after its original debut back in 1997, Penny Hardaway’s Air Foamposite One has become one of Nike’s most successful off-court models. Today, the Air Foamposite One is regarded as somewhat of a cultural icon and its “Galaxy” iteration is responsible for aiding the model in achieving this status. Its glossy uppers feature somewhat iridescent, galaxy-themed graphics and it is equipped with glow-in-the-dark outsoles. In recent years, the Air Foamposite One “Galaxy” has continued to become more and more popular. Pairs of the sneaker tend to pop up in the resale market, such as Flight Club offering it at a price of $1,500.
Eric Avar had designed the Air Foamposite One for Nike 20 years ago, which should make it obvious that 2017 marks the 20th anniversary of the futuristic basketball model. Two decades ago, Mike Bibby wore the Air Foamposite One “Royal” during a game against the Arizona Wildcats and Foamposite One became Penny Hardaway’s signature silhouette. Sneakerheads likely already know by now that the “Copper” was also one of the original colorways of the Air Foamposite One. It gets its nickname from its Copper-colored uppers, paired with Black-colored overlays and translucent outsoles.
