Both the NBA and Nike had once found themselves in search of their next star player when Michael Jordan retired from the sport of basketball in order to pursue a career in baseball. Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway, who was nicknamed as “Magic Johnson 2.0” and used to play alongside Shaquille O’Neal, became the likely candidate to reach a similar level of stardom as Michael Jordan had. Much like Michael Jordan, Penny Hardaway also got his name attached to a signature line and this year marks the Nike release of an iconic colorway of his second signature model.
Nike did not really make the wrong choice by picking Penny Hardaway as a substitute for Michael Jordan. Even before the Nike Air Penny series gained popularity, the Air Penny 1 became a bestseller and an instant hit simply because its heel featured Hardaway’s signature number “1.” Shockingly, Michael Jordan also made his unexpected comeback and Penny was also at the top of his game at the time, while Nike got busy with other classic sneaker series. Despite being absent for quite some time, highly anticipated and coveted retro sneakers from the Nike Air Penny line have been returning over the past couple of months.
The Nike Air Penny 1/2 Cent, which is known for being Penny Hardaway’s hybrid signature model, also made its comeback not so long ago. However, one particular Air Penny II colorway did not make it to retailers until recently and it is the “Atlantic Blue” iteration that Nike had originally dropped back in 1996. The suede upper of the sneaker is dressed up in a combination of Atlantic Blue and White. It also features the 3M accents, Penny 2’s signature asymmetrical lacing system, rippling wave midsole support, and a Zoom/Max unit. Despite the lack of initial details, the beginning of this year marked the Nike release 2016 of the Air Penny 2 “Atlantic Blue” on January 1st.
