Crosstrainers or regular sneakers are not the kind of footwear that comes to mind when thinking about hitting the ball being pitched and making home runs over the dirt on a baseball diamond. When playing on a baseball field, it becomes necessary to wear cleats because of the infield (dirt) playing surface and the rigors of the sport. Just like it is in basketball, footwear brands also sponsor accomplished and gifted baseball athletes in order to get their training sneakers endorsed. An example of this would be the Air Griffey Max 1 and the rest of the Air Griffey Max series from Nike sneakers.
Soon after its release back in 1995, the Nike Air Diamond Fury Mid had become closely associated with Ken Griffey Jr., somewhat becoming his unofficial signature baseball trainer sneakers. It was not until 1996 that Nike crafted an actual signature model for “The Kid,” which upon his request was designed to be bold and distinctive. Also upon his request, Nike had whipped up both a cleats and turf version of the silhouette so he could wear it not only for games, but also during practice and workouts. This is how the Nike Air Grieffey Max 1 came to be and now it is returning.
July 24th is scheduled to mark the moment that Ken Griffey Jr. gets immortalized in the world of baseball amongst the sport’s most elite athletes by being inducted into the Baseball Hall Of Fame. The occasion is certainly a significant one and in commemoration of it, Nike decided to bring several original colorways of the Air Griffey Max 1. However, the one that stands out the most from them all is the OG “Freshwater” iteration that was designed with inspiration coming from the official Northwest Green & White team colors, and the uniforms of the Seattle Mariners, Ken’s former team.
Ken Griffey Jr.’s Hall Of Fame Induction does not take place until near the end of this month. However, the Nike Air Griffey Max 1 “Freshwater” has already arrived at Nike SNKRS and other retailers on July 7th, and sneakerheads should still be able to cop a pair at a price of $150.
